Rainy day practice

…there. If you would like to dry fire on a regular basis, I recommend treating yourself to a very inexpensive, easy to use safety device such as a Training Barrel or firearm block. There are a lot of things you can do with a gun-shaped object — a gun that has been disabled with one of these safety devices — that you cannot safely do with an “unloaded” gun. Here are some of them: Learn how to use your designated safe room…. Continue reading

“Women Should Always Use Revolvers”

…ll, lightweight models most often recommended for women. Those who shoot more than one type of gun soon discover that these super small, super lightweight revolvers are actually among the most difficult and least comfortable guns to use. Slightly larger guns tend to be much more comfortable for most shooters. This means beginners who start on a slightly larger and slightly heavier gun will more likely keep shooting, and are more likely to get… Continue reading

Would You Carry a Gun…

…ing. As a result, if I’m ever not carrying, it is because I made a deliberate decision not to do so right then, based upon some specific reason not to do so. So I don’t have to look for reasons why I might want a gun wherever I’m going. I’m taking my gun with me unless I have a good reason not to. In every situation where I haven’t carried in the past couple of years, it’s been either specifically illegal, or… Continue reading

Lessons from the Headlines: Abduction Attempt

…t if you make a habit of setting it in the cart as you shop. Even if you had the purse attached to your body, that’s a very complex situation and it’s very likely everything would be too tangled for accessing the gun. If you carry on-body: would you be able to get your gun out of the holster during this violent and chaotic situation? Maybe not. Especially if you prefer to carry in a soft, squishy holster under several layers of… Continue reading

Crystal ball

…st, I have no idea what the prices will do, short or long term. It’s too unsettled right now to make that kind of guess. But I will say that if you don’t have any defensive firearm at all, any reasonably reliable gun is better than no gun. Whether your ‘ideal’ gun will become affordable again, or how long that might take, I truly don’t know. The prices will certainly stabilize if no new legislation passes, or if it… Continue reading

Smile for the camera

…y different perspectives on the proposed law, there really wasn’t a lot of tension in the air. My son and I had a really good conversation with one woman, who seemed genuinely puzzled that I would even let my son know we had guns in the house – let alone invite him to come with me to a political event supporting gun ownership. After some discussion, in which Firstborn showed himself very informed about gun safety, she graciously conceded that it… Continue reading

Like a Glock, Only Smaller

…so I didn’t really expect to like this gun. To my shock, I loved the little beast. What’s to love? Well, first up, it’s squee-ably adorable. It’s a small gun, a single stack with a very slim profile, as you can see from the pictures. But the pictures don’t do justice to the fundamental weirdness of holding a Glock that fits your hand with room to spare. It’s a little larger than some other guns in its class (think KelTec 3AT or Ruger LCP), but… Continue reading

Web Walk

…oints out that some media outlets are biased against gun owners. People who have been paying attention knew that already, but it’s a little surprising to see how dramatically the hard numbers stack up. That Texas Lady posted pictures on her blog of how the Marilyn holster (from Flashbang) worked for her. Good, clear pictures of how to use this holster. Oh, and here’s a tip: there’s at least one YouTube video that shows this holster… Continue reading
