Buying a Gun

…of any competent adult, while others require specific parental supervision. Still others set age limits for specific activities, with or without parental supervision. In most states, young adults may purchase rifles and shotguns for themselves when they reach 18 years old, or handguns after age 21. Some states permit 18- to 21-year-olds to own and possess handguns, but federal law bans these young adults from directly purchasing their own… Continue reading

Normalization of Deviance

…become more willing to relax it even further than that next time. For example: We might allow students to handle unloaded guns in a classroom that does not have a true safe direction. We might tell ourselves that because the guns are unloaded, we don’t really need a definite backstop that would reliably stop a bullet from going through the wall to hit someone on the other side. When we do that and nothing bad happens, we enjoy the convenience… Continue reading

Securing Firearms in the Home

…a victim. Particularly if it becomes known, and it will, that your own mouth was the cause of the thief knowing just where to find the safe. Gun Cabinets A fire safe will not usually be of a size to readily accommodate long guns. Therefore, those on a limited budget frequently opt for a gun cabinet. These are of sheet metal construction and have one, or sometimes two, basic keyed locks. It’s best to seriously consider attaching one of… Continue reading

Pistols as assault weapons

…lar handguns. This would include all Glock models at the very least, and possibly Beretta 92 and Taurus PT 92 … and even some 1911 models might be at risk. You might wonder, why would anyone try to ban these particular guns? It’s because each one of these semiautomatic guns has a full-auto counterpart of the same basic design. Of course, the full-auto ‘machine gun’ versions are already either highly-regulated or outright… Continue reading

Practice when ammo supplies are short

After you have done both the above: with a friend , using dummy guns or disabled guns, role play a home invasion. Then do a debrief. What worked? What didn’t? Was there anything you should have considered beforehand that made a difference during your role play? Do the same thing with airsoft guns…. Continue reading

“Train as you fight!”

…al experience. Pretend Attackers, Real Consequences Back to my primary point: all roleplaying scenarios — no matter how basic or advanced, static or active, entangled or distant — can be run without any risk of a gunshot hitting one of the participants. They can be run without compromising the mindset goal in any way simply by using an inert replica or dummy gun that could never launch a bullet even if someone did make a mistake by… Continue reading

The Other Three Rules

…t only takes a second to check.” These posts are right on target, and yet they also miss the mark. How’s that? There are FOUR rules of gun safety, not just one. By blaming a lapse entirely on Rule One (“All guns are always loaded”), we miss the real lesson in stories like this and risk losing the important safeguards provided by the other three rules. In this case, the fellow who shot himself seems to think he would have… Continue reading

Women’s Shooting Groups – Good & Bad

…er with like-minded others on the range is kind of a strong impulse for many people, early on. The club provides social and emotional support, along with reassuring lived experience that guns are normal and normal people use guns, for people who might otherwise not have any social entry point into gun ownership. It can be a great starting point. Later, as we become more experienced and accomplished as shooters, we definitely still benefit from… Continue reading
