Smile for the camera

…n years old – with me to a pro-rights rally near our state capital. Firstborn was quite excited about coming with me to the rally. Together, we made him a little sign that said, “The governor’s kids are protected by men with guns. My mom’s gun protects me!” My own sign said, “Don’t tell me how I can’t protect my children.” When we got to the event, Firstborn and I met up with friends and studied the lay of the land. As expected, there was a… Continue reading

“But did you die?”

…survived riding in cars without car seats, or with the less-safe older styles. So what does this have to do with locking up your guns where children can’t get them? Quite a lot! Here’s what modern “lock the guns up and educate your kids” firearms practices have accomplished on the child safety front.   Changes in parental safety practices — most notably, locking up the guns rather than hiding them or storing… Continue reading

Three quotes and a story

…erful guns the old man had crafted, using only hand tools. There were double shotguns and fine rifles with beautiful hardwood stocks and gorgeous engraving and inlay work. Charley liked the old man and enjoyed looking at the guns. He often did chores around the shop. One day the gunsmith sent for Charley. In accordance with the owner’s wishes, that sign prevented law-abiding people from carrying their concealed firearms with them when they entered the place. What it… Continue reading

…e selling their old safe queens to finance purchases of modern designs. If you did already have a defense gun that worked for you, and just wanted to move up to something else, I’d probably tell you to sit tight for a bit and wait to see what happens next. But do you remember the old cliché about the first rule in a gunfight? [1] We’ll also see a big clump of people moving to .40 and .45 caliber guns in the same frame sizes as their… Continue reading

Survey says …?

…that year, 23% of American women reported that they personally own a gun (not just have a gun in the house, but the gun in the house belongs to them personally). Okay, so what we have here are record numbers of people buying guns, and record numbers of women buying guns. At least 60% and possibly as high as 73% of peope who buy guns do so because they are specifically interested in self-defense. So why in the world are there so many programs… Continue reading
